I love discovering recipes on Pinterest but with a lot of them being American it's taken some time and chats with my American family and friends to find out the alternatives or how to make from scratch here in the UK. As some of our favourite family meals are pizza and pasta a lot of the recipes I save call for Italian Sausage.
Now a couple of times in Tesco's I have found Italian Sausages for sale and in the summer our local butchers - a traditional Sausage Shop will serve an Italian version of their popular sausages but they aren't easy to find.
So I've played around and come up with this version which I make and store in the freezer to use when a recipe calls for Italian Sausage.
What is Italian Sausage
As far as I have managed to work out from the many conversations Italian Sausage is a flavored sausagemeat which you can put into sausage skins but the times I've had it in the USA is on Pizza, in pasta or as a breakfast sausage (more like a burger than our British Sausages).
It's flavoured with fennel and paprika as well as other herbs and spices and can be "sweet" meaning not very hot and spicy or "spicy". This version is most definitely the sweet one although after my husband getting a Chilli Advent Calendar this year I have a feeling a lot more of our recipes in the future will have more spicy flavours in them.
